It turns out that in African hedgehogs, when closely inbred, a disease such as Degenerative Myelopathy, or Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS), emerges.
Wobbly hedgehog syndrome is a progressive, degenerative, neurological disease, the cause of which is associated with INbreeding (inbreeding). There is no cure for this disease!
SHE affects hedgehogs in the same way that multiple sclerosis affects people.
In most cases, the hind limbs are affected first, and then the paralysis spreads to the front limbs and other parts of the body. Sometimes paralysis appears on only one side of the body, in which case the hedgehog will begin to tip over to one side and will be unable to remain upright.
If the disease progresses, the hedgehog will eventually become completely immobile. In the cases that were studied, death occurred between 6 weeks and 19 months after the onset of symptoms.
Therefore, it is very important to know the ancestors of your pet and the obligatory presence of a pedigree!!! Only from responsible breeders it is a priority to obtain high-quality and healthy offspring, without a pedigree this is impossible!
Оказывается у африканских ежей при близко родственном скрещивании всплывает такая болячка как Дегенеративная миелопатия, или синдром шатающегося ежа Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS).
Синдром шатающегося ежа является прогрессирующим, дегенеративным, неврологическим заболеванием, причину которого связывают с БЛИЗКОРОДСТВЕННЫМ СКРЕЩИВАНИЕМ (инбридинг). Лекарств от это болезни - нет!
СШЕ действует на ежей так же, как рассеянный склероз действует на людей.
В большинстве случаев первыми страдают задние конечности, а затем паралич распространяется на передние конечности и другие части тела. Иногда паралич появляется лишь на одной стороне тела, в этом случае ежик начнет опрокидываться на один бок и будет не в состоянии оставаться в вертикальном положении.
Если болезнь прогрессирует, в конечном счете еж становится полностью обездвижен. В случаях, которые были изучены, смерть наступила от 6 недель до 19 месяцев после появления симптомов.
Поэтому очень важно знать предков своего питомца и обязательное наличие родословной!!!Только у ответственных заводчиков в приоритете стоит получить качественное и здоровое потомство, без родословной это невозможно!

THE FIRST Pygmy hedgehogs were brought to Moscow in 2008 by the breeder of the guinea pig nursery “Iz Strogino” Lidia Lutsenko. 3 Hungarian hedgehogs with a pedigree came to her. Nicknames: Kelinda Damba, Vele Bumba and Hedi Hedgies Tuncimaci (breeder - Hedvig Rabai). Kelinda Damba and Vele Bumba are brother and sister, and Hedi Hedgies Tuncimaci is a nephew (son of their sister) in relation to the first two. As a result, hedgehog breeding in Russia began with fairly close inbreeding.
In 2010-11, hedgehogs were imported from Germany in piece quantities. Hedgehogs were imported as adults. The age was usually indicated as 6-8 months, but in fact they often arrived, if they were females, then they had already emerged from breeding. Hedgehogs without age, without pedigree and often with diseases.
In 2011, the import of so-called Thai hedgehogs in boxes began - a characteristic feature of sales was that the seller could not tell anything about nutrition and maintenance. From the total mass of proposals, hedgehogs stood out for their small weight and lower price. There were diseases and deaths.
Now, importing hedgehogs from Europe is no longer such a problem. Many breeders can find hedgehogs from Germany (I really can’t say whether they are from there, I haven’t seen the documents...). Hedgehogs from Poland and their descendants have now arrived to us through Belarus. The popularity of hedgehogs is currently growing, new nurseries are appearing... among the general mass one can already identify quite competent breeders who are interested in working with animals, with their type and colors, and this is very pleasing. At the moment we are trying to unite enthusiasts for more productive work.
In Kharkov today this is the only registered nursery!!! The very first in Ukraine!
ПЕРВЫЕ Карликовые ежи были привезены в Москву в 2008г заводчицей питомника морских свинок "Из Строгино" Лидией Луценко. К ней приехали 3 венгерских ёжика с родословной. Клички: Kelinda Damba, Vele Bumba и Hedi Hedgies Tuncimaci (заводчик - Hedvig Rabai). Kelinda Damba и Vele Bumba - брат и сестра, а Hedi Hedgies Tuncimaci по отношения к первым двух является племянником (сыном их сестры). В результате чего, разведение ежей в России началось с довольно тесного инбридинга.
В 2010-11 ежей ввозили из Германии штучным кол-вом. Ежи ввозились взрослыми. Возраст как правило указывался 6-8 месяцев, а фактически часто приезжали, если самки, то уже вышедшие из размножения. Ежи без возраста, без родословной и не редко с болезнями.
В 2011 начался ввоз коробками, так называемых таиландских ежей - характерной чертой при продажах было то что продавец не мог ничего рассказать о питании и содержании. Из общей массы предложений ежи выделялись своим маленьким весом и более низкой ценой. Без болезней и смертей не обошлось.
Сейчас ввоз ежа из Европы стал уже не такой проблемой. У многих заводчиков можно встретить ежей из Германии (правда действительно ли они оттуда сказать не могу, документов не видела...). Через Белоруссию к нам сейчас поступили ежи из Польши и их потомки. Популярность ежей на данный момент растёт, появляются новые питомники... среди общей массы уже можно выделить довольно грамотных заводчиков, которые заинтересованы именно в работе с животными, с их типом и окрасами и это очень радует. На данный момент мы пытаемся объединить энтузиастов для более продуктивной работы.
В Харькове на сегодняшний день-это единственный зарегистрированный питомник!!! В Украине самый первый!
